Matt Frumin was first elected to represent Ward 3 on the Council of the District of Columbia in 2022 by a diverse, grassroots coalition rooted in his deep experience, connection, and advocacy in Ward 3 and across the district.
On the Council, Matt has been entrusted by his colleagues with his current role as Chairperson of the Committee on Human Services, leading performance, legislative, and budget oversight of the Department of Human Services, the Deputy Mayor for Public and Economic Development, the District of Columbia Public Library, the Office of Lottery and Gaming, and the Office of Cable Television, Film, Music and Entertainment. He previously served as Chairperson of the Subcommittee on Recreation and Community Affairs, and currently sits on the Committee on Facilities, Committee on Housing, and Committee on Executive Administration and Labor. He also serves as a Member of the Board of the District’s Workforce Investment Council, and as Vice Chair of the National Capitol Region Transportation Planning Board of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments.
Matt joined the Council following nearly two decades of community advocacy and engagement. He served as a member and Chair of an ANC 3E, was part of the community team working on the renovation of the now Jackson-Reed High School, and helped found the Coalition for DC Public Schools and Communities (C4DC). He also served on and chaired the Board of the Lisner Louise Dickson Hurt Home, an assisted living facility serving low income DC seniors in Friendship Heights where he helped launch the first Housing Production Trust Fund project in Ward 3 ever, creating 93 units of deeply affordable senior housing. He also served on and chaired the Board of the Tenleytown Main Street, supporting local businesses and community events in the Tenleytown area. In addition, in his decades of public service, he has served on many boards, task forces, and committees, including on student assignment (school boundaries), traffic and pedestrian safety, park permitting, powerline undergrounding and how best to manage the District’s park assets.
Before becoming a Councilmember, Matt was an attorney working on matters ranging from estate planning to international trade. He was appointed to the State Department during the Clinton administration and focused on issues of democracy, human rights, labor, women’s rights and the rule of law. He has also worked on pro-democracy projects and elections around the world.
Matt Frumin and his wife Lena Frumin live in AU Park, where they raised their three children – all of whom graduated from DC public schools. He is now a grandfather three times over, which continues to ground his work making the District a place where families like his can continue to grow and thrive, for generations to come.
